Testosterone Replacement

Now offering Testosterone Replacement Therapy(TRT)

How does Testosterone Replacement Therapy Work at Badger State Hydrate?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) works by supplementing the body with testosterone when natural production is insufficient. At Badger State Hydrate, this is done by injecting testosterone under the skin once weekly. The goal is to restore testosterone levels to a normal range, which helps alleviate symptoms of low testosterone and promotes overall health and well-being.  Please note that all potential patients need either a provider note requesting TRT or recent lab results documenting low testosterone levels.  Lab values need to demonstrate total testosterone levels of under 30ng/dL.

Our TRT Process:

  1. Schedule an appointment with one of our medical providers, which will determine if TRT at BSH is right for you.
  2. Fill out our online intake form (included when booking your appointment). *Please note: Lab testing for testosterone levels CAN be completed by your primary provider.
  3. If approved, you will be scheduled with one of our highly-trained nurses to begin TRT treatment!

Who is eligible for Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

At this time we are treating biological males with clinical proof of low testosterone levels. While we certainly advocate for biological females obtaining testosterone for certain conditions and fully support gender-affirming hormone therapy, we currently do not have the in-house laboratory capabilities to meet our strict safety standards at this time. If you are a biological female looking for safe testosterone treatment, or a patient seeking gender-affirming hormone therapy, please call us and we can share the clinics we’d recommend. Finally, men with the following conditions are not currently eligible for TRT as the safety risks may outweigh the benefits:

  1. Men planning on fathering children in the future: While TRT is possible to perform in those hoping to father children in the future, it takes specialized in-house lab testing that we do not have at this time.
  2. Prostate Cancer: Active or suspected prostate cancer is a contraindication, as TRT could stimulate cancer growth.
  3. Breast Cancer: Men with active breast cancer should avoid TRT due to the potential exacerbation of the disease.
  4. Severe Untreated Sleep Apnea: TRT may worsen sleep apnea, a condition characterized by blocked breathing during sleep.
  5. Uncontrolled Heart Disease: Individuals with severe heart conditions, such as uncontrolled hypertension or congestive heart failure, might be at increased risk for cardiovascular events with TRT.
  6. Liver Disease: Severe liver disease or liver dysfunction can interfere with the metabolism and effects of testosterone.
  7. Severe Renal (Kidney) Disease: Advanced kidney disease may affect the safety and effectiveness of TRT.
  8. Polycythemia: Elevated red blood cell count can be worsened by TRT, increasing the risk of blood clots and other complications.
  9. Prior History of Blood Clots: A history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) could be exacerbated by TRT.
  10. Mental Health Issues: Severe psychiatric conditions or unstable mental health issues may require careful consideration and monitoring.

What are the benefits of Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) offers significant benefits for individuals with clinically diagnosed low testosterone levels (hypogonadism). Here are some of the key benefits of TRT:

  1. Increased Muscle Mass and Strength: TRT can enhance muscle protein synthesis, leading to gains in muscle mass and strength, particularly when combined with resistance training.
  2. Improved Bone Density: Testosterone plays a crucial role in maintaining bone mineral density. TRT can help prevent osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures.
  3. Enhanced Libido and Sexual Function: Testosterone is vital for sexual health, including libido, erectile function, and overall sexual satisfaction. TRT can restore these functions in men with low testosterone levels.
  4. Mood and Cognitive Function: Low testosterone levels are associated with irritability, fatigue, and cognitive decline. TRT may improve mood, energy levels, and cognitive function in some individuals.
  5. Cardiovascular Health: There is evidence suggesting that TRT may have a positive impact on cardiovascular health, including improved lipid profiles and reduced risk of heart disease in some cases.

Improved Quality of Life: Many men report an overall improvement in their sense of well-being, energy levels, and vitality with TRT.

What are the risks of Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can be effective for managing symptoms of low testosterone, but it also carries potential side effects. Common side effects in men include:

  1. Acne and Oily Skin: Increased oil production and acne outbreaks are common as testosterone can stimulate sebaceous glands.
  2. Increased Hair Growth: May lead to excessive growth of facial and body hair, and possibly worsening of male-pattern baldness.
  3. Fluid Retention: Can cause swelling or edema in the hands, feet, or legs.
  4. Breast Enlargement (Gynecomastia): Development of breast tissue, which can be tender or painful.
  5. Mood Changes: Can include irritability, mood swings, or increased aggression.
  6. Sleep Apnea: Worsening of obstructive sleep apnea or development of sleep apnea in individuals with a predisposition.
  7. Increased Red Blood Cell Count (Polycythemia): Elevated red blood cell levels can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke.
  8. Reduced Sperm Production and Infertility: TRT can lower sperm production, potentially impacting fertility.
  9. Testicular Shrinkage: Decrease in testicular size due to reduced natural testosterone production.
  10. Libido Changes: May experience fluctuations in sexual desire or performance.
  11. Prostate Issues: Potential for worsening of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or increasing risk of prostate cancer, especially in older men.
  12. Elevated Cholesterol Levels: Can affect lipid profiles, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues.

Bone Density Changes: Long-term TRT may impact bone density, although this is less common.
