Here at Badger State Hydrate, we LOVE our vitamins! So let’s talk a bit about them. This post will focus on an all-time fan fave – vitamin C. We all know vitamin C. Maybe even had that nasty, foamy “Emergen-C” when feeling under the weather… but why? What does vitamin C really do for us?

First things first, it’s important to know that vitamin C is an “essential vitamin.” This means that although our bodies cannot produce it, it is critical for our well-being and daily body functions. We receive much of our vitamin C by consuming fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, or vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower. There is no shortage of oral vitamin C supplements on the market. And, if from a reputable source, these supplements are a great addition to one’s diet. However, if you aren’t eating enough vitamin C-rich foods, and you’re looking for a faster-acting, higher dose, you might want to consider an intravenous vitamin C supplement.

Along with working at Badger State Hydrate, I am a charge nurse in one of the local Emergency Departments. Not only that, I work the night shift – UGH. When I learned about the importance of vitamin C for well-being, but also for recovery, I started taking it each day post shift. The night shift in the ER is so mentally, emotionally, and physically demanding. To be the best that I can be for myself and for my patients, I supplement with oral vitamin C, and I always choose IV therapy that includes vitamin C as well.

Vitamin C has many important daily operations in the body. It is a strong antioxidant. Our body is constantly fighting off free radicals in our bloodstream, which increase when we are stressed or working out. These can lead to diseases such as heart disease. Vitamin C also boosts immunity by promoting the production of blood cells that fight off infection. Vitamin C lowers cholesterol levels which lowers the risk of heart disease. It also lowers cortisol levels. Cortisol is the “stress hormone” which is produced when we are stressed physically or emotionally. Chronically high levels can cause weight gain. Vitamin C aids in collagen production. This is one of the main building blocks of the cells specifically for hair, skin, and nails. Many people have low “blood levels,” or low iron levels. Vitamin C can aid by helping the body absorb iron from our diet. Along with the above daily operations of our good pal vitamin C, it’s also super important for recovery post-workout. Are you feeling sore because you got too “swole” at the gym? Vitamin C can help with this soreness, too. Vitamin C has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Our muscles get achy after working out because they’re inflamed. If we reduce the inflammation, we reduce soreness. Even if you aren’t working out, it can be helpful to recover from the daily stressors of work or family life.

See how important vitamin C is?!

For your next Badger State Hydrate visit, make sure to choose an IV therapy that contains vitamin C. Here are a few formulas that already include it. However, if you have something else in mind, you should not hesitate to ask us to add it!
